Opening a Bookstore Retreat

Join us on beautiful Amelia Island, Florida for what prior trainees have renamed “Bookstore Boot Camp” … three and a half busy days packed with opportunities to learn, network, and gain confidence  as a bookstore owner.

The American Booksellers Association, previously known for its booksellers’ school, now looks to The Bookstore Training Group of Paz & Associates to provide bookstore training for people who want to learn how to open a bookstore and those who have purchased an existing bookstore so everyone can begin with a strong business foundation.

New and prospective bookstore owners from around the world have joined us for this one-of-a-kind professional training program that focuses on the success strategies of launching and managing an independent bookstore.

Whether you’re interested in a children’s bookstore, small bookstore, bookstore cafe, new and used bookstore, or any kind of specialty store that includes selling books, all of the retail strategies will apply. If you’re ready to plunge into the book business, or even if you’re a seasoned bookseller looking to be more profitable, come for the full week. If you’re trying to determine whether owning a bookstore is right for you, come for the first two days. Some of the things you’ll learn:

    • Tangible competitive advantages indie booksellers are using now
    • Design strategies that will make your store memorable
    • How (and where) to buy books and shape your inventory selection
    • How to create and use a planogram
    • How to merchandise books, cards, toys and a variety of merchandise you’ll want to carry
    • What bookstore computer systems do for you, what the screens look like, and how to use them to help run and manage your new retail business
    • Buying and inventory management strategies to help you create a fabulous inventory and create profits
    • Ways to drive traffic to your store
    • Strategies to develop customer loyalty
    • Ways to use technology to organize operations and create efficiencies
    • and more

With all new businesses, there are pitfalls and hazards you want to avoid by assuming you can pick things up as you go. When 6 in 10 people who open a bookstore fail to invest in any serious training for their new career, you can easily understand why bookstores fail.
